Engage Nepal with Science is launching a pilot initiative titled Seeds of Renewal, focused on integrating Indigenous agricultural knowledge with modern ecological science to build more sustainable and climate-resilient farming systems in Nepal.
For generations, farming communities in Nepal have developed practices that sustain soil fertility, conserve water, and protect biodiversity. However, recent shifts toward chemical-intensive agriculture have contributed to declining soil health and increased challenges for rural farmers. This project responds to that challenge by reviving and scientifically evaluating traditional practices while adapting them for today’s environmental and agricultural realities.
Our aim is to document and assess Indigenous and local farming knowledge, strengthen soil health and biodiversity through regenerative approaches, and co-develop practical solutions with farming communities, students, and researchers. We also seek to build capacity among youth and marginalized groups—particularly women—to actively engage in climate-resilient agriculture.
The project is being implemented through two pilot sites: Kalikot District, in collaboration with the ODA Foundation, and Paklihawa Campus, one of the constituent campuses of the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS), Tribhuvan University, located in Rupandehi. These sites will serve as hubs for testing and demonstrating regenerative agricultural practices adapted to diverse ecological contexts.
Through these pilots, we aim to generate evidence, strengthen collaboration between communities and researchers, and develop scalable models for sustainable agriculture across Nepal.
